The Lancer Ladies lacrosse team, comprised mostly of players from Madison La Follette High School, defeated two-time defending state champion Hartland Arrowhead to win the 2009 state championship in girl’s lacrosse last Saturday, May 30th at Middleton High School.
Arrowhead, whose girl’s lacrosse program was previously undefeated in intrastate competition, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of Saturday’s game. The Lancers would answer with three straight goals from captains Senior Courtney Golbach and Junior Emily Pressentin, and trade goals with Arrowhead to go into halftime with a 7-6 lead.
Neither team ever led by more than two goals in an exciting and fast-paced state championship game game with seven ties and four lead changes. Junior Attacker Kelly Huemmer would score the winning goal to put the Lancers up 13-11 with under two minutes to play. Arrowhead was able to narrow the deficit to one, and what would have been a game tying goal in the closing seconds went wide, sealing the win for the Lady Lancers.
